Colorado PreLicensing Requirements 

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Colorado state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete 40-hours of approved prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), and 10-hours of Colorado specific training.  An applicant seeking a Colorado Life, Accident, and Health insurance license, must complete 80-hours of approved prelicense education and 10-hours of Colorado specific training.  The 10-hour Colorado specific training includes: 3-hours of Principals of Insurance, 3-hours of Ethics, and 4-hours of Legal Concepts and Regulations.  See below for license specific PLE requirements in Colorado:

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in Colorado.  An applicant must meet Colorado’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.

IMPORTANT: The licensing candidate must take the initial examination within 12 months of completing the PLE course.  If a passing exam score is not achieved by the end of the 12 months, applicants will have to retake the PLE course, and earn a new certificate of completion.

Prelicense.com reports PLE course completions electronically to Sircon daily.

State Licensing Exam

IMPORTANT: When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to provide their provider school code number.  PreLicense.com's Colorado provider school code number is65639.

Methods of Registration

Materials Needed to Present at Exam Site

Candidates must present two (2) forms of current signature identification. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. Identification must be in English.

 Testing Sites, Fees, and Schedules

State Exam Passing Score

Applicants must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.

Exam Retakes

Candidates who fail one (1) portion of the exam and pass the other need only retake the portion that they failed and do so within one (1) year of passing the first portion in order to pass the entire exam. If the candidate does not pass both portions within one (1) year, he/she must retake the entire examination.

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Colorado agent license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.

Fingerprinting Process

There are no fingerprint requirements in Colorado.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Annuity Training: All producers licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such.

Long-Term Care: Before selling LTC policies in Colorado producers must complete 16 hours of state approved LTC training.  Part 1 of the 16 hours shall consist of 8 hours on general LTC, which can be taken online self study or in a classroom, and Part 2 shall consist of 8 hours specific to LTC partnership, which must be taken in a classroom.
