New Jersey PreLicensing Requirements

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident New Jersey state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA).  An applicant who wishes to obtain a Life, Accident & Health license must complete 40 hours of PLE, and will receive a separate certificate of completion for each LOA.

State Candidate Handbook

Before making an exam reservation Applicants should thoroughly review the State of New Jersey Candidate Information Bulletin which contains the exam content outlines and important information regarding eligibility and the examination and licensing application process.

PLE Course Delivery

Per New Jersey PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the prelicense education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in New Jersey.  An applicant must meet New Jersey’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.  Certificates are valid for 2 years from the date of completion.

State Reporting Requirements

Currently, New Jersey Department of  Banking and Insurance does not required PLE course completions to be reported to the state.

Fingerprinting Process

New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance requires that candidates submit fingerprints through MorphoTrak.  New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance will not process a license application until they receive the results of the criminal history review.  Click here for instructions, forms and fees.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents who move to New Jersey from another state who wish to obtain a New Jersey resident license must meet the following requirements in order to be exempt from prelicense education and examination requirements:

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a New Jersey producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state and hold an equivalent license for same line of authority.

Fingerprinting Process

          There are no fingerprint requirements for nonresidents in New Jersey.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care:  Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in New Jersey, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, NAIC LTC training course.
