New Jersey PreLicensing Requirements

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident New Jersey state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be a resident of New Jersey or have principal place of business in New Jersey
• Be trustworthy, competent, financially responsible, and of good personal and business reputation
• Complete an approved prelicensing course of study (see prelicense requirements below)
• Submit fingerprints
• Pass a written examination and file a license application

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA).  An applicant who wishes to obtain a Life, Accident & Health license must complete 40 hours of PLE, and will receive a separate certificate of completion for each LOA.

• 20-hours New Jersey Life Insurance
• 20-hours New Jersey Accident & Health Insurance
• 20-hours New Jersey Property Insurance
• 20-hours New Jersey Casualty Insurance

Before making an exam reservation Applicants should thoroughly review the State of New Jersey Candidate Information Bulletin which contains the exam content outlines and important information regarding eligibility and the examination and licensing application process.

PLE Course Delivery

Per New Jersey PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the prelicense education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.

PLE Course Exam

• Passing Score:  Applicants must pass the PLE final exam with a 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion.
• Exam Proctor Requirements:  PreLicense.com final exams must be monitored by a disinterested third party. Proctors must not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, co-owners, or business associates; or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in New Jersey.  An applicant must meet New Jersey’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.  Certificates are valid for 2 years from the date of completion.

State Reporting Requirements

Currently, New Jersey Department of  Banking and Insurance does not required PLE course completions to be reported to the state.

Materials Needed to Present at Exam Site

• Candidates must present 2 forms of identification.  One must be government  issued which bears your signature and photo.  The second form of identification must have your signature and preprinted legal name.  All identification must match the name that you provided at registration.
• PLE course completion certificate
• Failing score report for exam retakes

Testing Sites, Fees & Schedules

• Exams and Fees:  A list of Insurance License Exams and exam fees can be found in the State of New Jersey Candidate Information Bulletin.  The current fee for exams is $47.00.

State Exam Passing Score

• Applicants must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.
• Candidates who must retake the examination must wait 24 hours before rescheduling their exam.

Important:  License applications cannot be processed until NJ DOI receives the results of your criminal background check. Please refer to instructions below regarding making an appointment through MorphoTrak.

Fingerprinting Process

New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance requires that candidates submit fingerprints through MorphoTrak.  New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance will not process a license application until they receive the results of the criminal history review.  Click here for instructions, forms and fees.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents who move to New Jersey from another state who wish to obtain a New Jersey resident license must meet the following requirements in order to be exempt from prelicense education and examination requirements:

• Licensed for same lines of authority in previous home state
• The candidate must be licensed in good standing in previous home state or if the application is received within 90 days of cancellation of previous home state license

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a New Jersey producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state and hold an equivalent license for same line of authority.

Fingerprinting Process

          There are no fingerprint requirements for nonresidents in New Jersey.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care:  Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in New Jersey, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, NAIC LTC training course.
